After reading this funny take, I began thinking about Felicity. Wasn't that show great? I remember watching it in high school, and seeing Felicity go to college in New York City made me eager to go off to school. It was fun watching her make cool new friends, fall in love and wear an endless array of fantastic sweaters. Those sweaters, along with cords, peacoats, boots and loungewear get that away-at-university vibe just right -- even if I'm past the days of cramming for exams.

Over the past couple months, I've become obsessed with reruns of My So-Called Life on the Sundance Channel. I was a bit too young for the show when it came out in the mid-nineties, but I'm loving it now. It feels so true to that time, with Claire Danes as fifteen-year-old Angela Chase capturing just what it's like to be in high school. And the grungy style feels so appropriate for fall -- or for cutting geometry to go make out with Jordan Catalano.

The Sound of Music is an incredible movie, a film that always uplifts and inspires. Julie Andrews is wonderful in it, and Christopher Plummer is so dashing. But until recently I never gave much thought to the fashion -- but it's pretty great too! Here are a few of my favorite things:
Green and white prints feel so fresh for running around this summer -- singing on a mountainside, climbing trees and falling into lakes are optional.
I'm crazy about the full skirts and nipped waists that the girls wear in the movie. And who doesn't love a cute sun hat?
And I want a soft, fluttery-sleeve dress perfect for falling in love and kissing in a gazebo!

Each year when spring rolls around, I get a little angst-y. Even though I've been out of high school for years, I can't quite shake out of spring-fever, school's-almost-out, wanna-be-free mode.
The movie that captures these feelings best is Dazed and Confused, set on the last day of school in 1976. It's a fun flick about friendships and hookups, popularity and parties. And the fashion's pretty cool too, all bell-bottom jeans, wedge sandals, vests and psychedelic-print tops.
Given this inspiration and since '70s style is a big trend this spring, here are a few pieces I'd love to wear -- even if I'm not cutting class or heading to a kegger.

This weekend I watched French Kiss, the 1995 movie starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. I'd forgotten how funny it is, how neurotic the main character Kate is as she travels to France to win back her fiance. I'd also forgotten how cute some of her outfits are. A few pieces feel perfect as spring approaches, even if my plans don't include jetting off to Paris and Cannes.

Dirty Dancing is one of my all-time favorite movies. While I've loved its characters, storyline, dancing and music for years, the fashion of the film somehow seems right as I think about spring and summer. Maybe I'll knot a white shirt above jean shorts or pair an embroidered top with white cropped pants. Hopefully I'll dance the night away in a swooshy pink dress and metallic sandals. Who's with me?
